Pigeon management services
Are pigeons a problem at your property?
Pigeon management measures can be provided by Spiderman YP. We offer both non-lethal preventive methods and humanely carried out euthenasia.
Pigeons were introduced to Australia by the early settlers and established populations in cities and towns as they escaped. Feral pigeons often inhabit buildings and other structures as a substitute for cliffs and other rock formations. They can be found nesting under eaves, roofs and window ledges. Their faeces is corrosive and can damage stone edifices and metal structures. Damage can also be caused to monuments, air conditioning units, and other roof top machinery.
Pigeons can breed throughout the year. They do not migrate far from their birthplace and tend to nest in the same area abd as such, measures to make them relocate is challenging.
Health risks
Pigeons pose health risks to humans as they are known to harbour a number of diseases. They can also transmit livestock diseases, such as salmonellosis and tuberculosis. The risk to humans is low, however, analysis has revealed that feral pigeons harbour a total of 60 different human pathogenic organisms including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and a protozoan. Five of these pathogens are routinely transmitted to humans. They also host a range of parasites including intestinal worms, lice and avian mites. Pigeon management measures
Their are a number of non-lethal preventive measures available that can move a colony on from your property but they are likely to re-establish themselves at your next-door neighbour’s place. A community effort is needed with preventive measures.
For large or persistent pigeon problems lethal control methods may be a more successful option. Lethal methods, such as sedation followed by euthenasia, must be carried out by licensed pest control operators. A painless narcotic is added to the pigeon’s food source and once consumed it will put the pigeons to sleep. This does not harm the bird; they are just stupefied and sedated, making it easy for them to be collected for euthanasia. If bait is ingested by non-targeted bird species they can be looked after until they revive and then be released. Once baiting has been completed the area is thoroughly swept and the bait disposed of or re-used later.
